The Wellness Plan Answers Opioid Crisis Demands with Onsite Substance Abuse Services
DETROIT – December 2017 – In Michigan, overdose deaths from non-heroin opioids have more than tripled since 2012, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. To meet the crisis head-on, The Wellness Plan Medical Centers (TWP), a Detroit-based health care provider, has received a grant to bring onsite substance abuse services to each of its five medical centers.
TWP received $75,000 in Access Increases in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (AIMS) funding to support these service offerings, which are expected to aid 400 new patients with mental health and substance abuse disorders in the first year of implementation.
“The opioid epidemic is one of the greatest health crises our country has faced in recent history,” said TWP CEO Anthony King. “We, as health care providers, are the first line of defense and it is essential that we do everything we can to increase access to services that can help those affected by this deadly condition.”
Through the program, TWP will offer access to a mental health and substance abuse specialist, technology to conduct electronic behavioral health screenings, WiFi enhancements and software to establish telemedicine capacity, and expanded access to related services through collaboration with community mental health agencies.
New services offered through the partnerships will include screening to identify patients for behavioral health needs, behavioral health assessments of new and existing patients, behavioral health treatment services, telemedicine for ongoing treatment, and the coordination of integrated services for patients presenting with mental health and substance use disorders.
