|As we prepare to celebrate National Health Center Week (Aug. 4 – 10) we thought it would be a good time to pause and recognize the expansion of our ocations and services in recent years.
The Wellness Plan Medical Centers has worked hard over the past several years to expand our medical services and to add locations so that we can provide better health care services to our local community.
Our mission of providing health care to the under and uninsured and raising awareness about our services is aligned with National Health Center Week, which celebrates the accomplishments of America’s health centers. Health centers serve 28 million patients – a number that continues to grow along with the demand for affordable primary care, according to the National Association of Health Care Centers.
In Michigan, 45 community health centers provide primary and preventive health care to more than 700,000 patients in rural and urban communities across Michigan, according to the Michigan Primary Care Association.
The Wellness Plan has been a part of this community since 2007 when we became a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike. Our history dates back to 1969 when the Detroit Model Neighborhood’s Health Council began planning a health care initiative aimed at delivering health care to the city’s low-income areas. Over the past decade, our revenue has more than doubled, annual patient encounters have climbed from 33,000 to more than 73,000.
Our growth has been possible because of the addition of new health care services and new locations. Here are some examples of those efforts:
- April 2019: TWP launched a pharmacy delivery service that provides low-cost prescription options.
- March 2018: Opened our sixth’s location at KEYS Grace Academy in Madison Heights.
- Introduced Urgent Care services at East Medical Center to help people overcome common barriers like distance or socioeconomics.
- November 2017: Added dental services at our East Area Medical Center as part of a $1 million, 2,500-square-foot renovation.
The Wellness Plan will continue to strive to meet those needs across our community as the demand for primary care services among the uninsured and underinsured continues to grow.
